YOUTH: A CLOSING GATE TO TOBACCO WORLD


This course covers broad aspects of India's public health problems of tobacco use, and promotion and helps you to identify ways to implement tobacco control policies. You will become proficient in areas not just related to tobacco control, but also practice the art of peer learning and support. There will be 3 levels of capacity building starting with ‘Foundational’, ‘Advanced’, and ‘Expert’. From each level, the learner will move from being a ‘Peer educator’ to a ‘Peer supporter’ to a ‘Peer leader’ respectively.;

As a peer educator, you will mostly be mobilizing all the community engagement activities from the NYIN wellbeing clubs. As peer supporters you will be heading all the district-level activities and mentoring the peer educators. At the peer leader level, you will be heading all the district level activities from a state's perspective, writing reports, strategizing action plans in districts, and mentoring peer supporters.

Prerequisites:

  • Learner has to be between 15-30 years of age.
  • Be fluent in English and basics of Hindi.
  • Have access to laptop/ smartphone with good internet connection.
  • Have basic knowledge of working with google documents/ folders, MS Office tools, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter

Foundation level 

(Peer Educator)

This course will teach you the following:

  •  The role of peer educators in tobacco control and learn the application of self-advocacy into the field. 
  • Enhance subject knowledge on NCDs, tobacco and its social cum health effects, tobacco control laws.

  • Assist in exploring COTPA violations, social norms surrounding tobacco and harms inflicted by tobacco on society and on one’s health through field work.

  • To voice and express youth vulnerabilities that affect one’s well-being and health by understanding social media channels of communication.

Media Advocacy

Media advocacy is defined as the strategic use of mass media and community advocacy to advance environmental change or a public policy initiative.

Media advocacy is a crucial component of a comprehensive media campaign because it empowers the community and targets policymakers.
